BEPZA gives highest priority to workers safety: Law Minister

BEPZA always gives highest priority to the safety & security of the workers. It reflects through Workers-Owners-Management synergy prevailing in the EPZs. Mr. Anisul Huq, MP, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs made the statements on Sunday (28 March) during the launching ceremony of BEPZA Helpline for the EPZs workers at BEPZA Complex. Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister as a chief guest formally inaugurated the BEPZA Helpline through a phone call connected with EPZs. 

Law Minister said, the government has taken different initiatives to ensure rights and privileges of workers. Bangladesh has achieved a tremendous success in economic growth during the last decade under the leadership of the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, He added.

Mr. Anisul Huq also said, Bangladesh has become an attractive destination for investment in Asia as well as global arena due to its’ geo-regional location, the most inexpensive and easily trainable workforce and moderate production cost.

Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus, Principal Secretary to the Honourable Prime Minister, as the special guest of the program, said that BEPZA is a unique organization to uphold the rights of the workers. Praising the initiative of BEPZA of launching helpline for the EPZ workers he said, other industrial units and organizations will be inspired to take such initiatives for the welfare of the workers. Mentioning the scenario of Savar & Ashulia area of Dhaka before and after setting up EPZ he said, Dhaka EPZ transformed this area into an industrial belt. He praised the activities of BEPZA and wished its further success.

Executive Chairman of BEPZA Major General Md Nazrul Islam, SPP, ndu, afwc, psc, G described on the background and purpose of the helpline (16128) in his welcome speech. Dedicating this helpline for Mujib birth centenary he said, this is a milestone towards digital Bangladesh and to fulfill the commitment of the government to ensure workplace safety and workers’ rights. It will help us in addressing the grievances and improving the working conditions effectively, he added.

Ambassador & Head of delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh H.E Ms. Rensje Teerink said, BEPZA as well as Bangladesh is on right track for producing diversified products. She expressed her satisfaction on EPZ working environment and said, European Union is ready to support to any welfare initiatives taken for the welfare of the workers. 

Country Director of International Labour Organization (ILO) in Bangladesh Mr. Tuomo Poutiainen said, BEPZA plays a pivotal role in ensuring workers rights, workplace safety and social protection. He thanked BEPZA for taking initiative to start BEPZA Helpline for EPZ workers. 

Among others, Secretary, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of Ministry of Law, Justice & Parliamentary affairs, Mr. K.M Abdus Salam, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Paban Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of BEZA including the high officials of different ministries and organizations were present in the program. From BEPZA Members, Secretary & General Managers were also present in the program and all zonal GMs along with workers representatives, Counselor- Cum Inspectors and investors were connected virtually in the program.

Mentionable that, 423 thousand Bangladeshi nationals are working in different enterprises of EPZs under BEPZA up to February 2021. BEPZA has achieved US$ 5,516 million investment and exported goods worth of US$ 84,781 million since its inception.
